Year 5 – Buzzard Class

Welcome To Buzzard Class

My name is Miss Boycott and I am the Year 5 class teacher every Wednesday to Friday. I’ve been at Little Sutton School for almost as long as the school building has been in existence, so I’m ‘part of the furniture!’ Along the way, I have taught all year groups from EYFS to year 6. This will be my 34th year of teaching and I know it’s going to be another great one with all of you!

Mrs. Singer is the Year 5 teacher every Monday and Tuesday and has been with the school for many years too. Together, we’ve got a great year ahead, with lots to find out and do!

In Buzzard Class, we work collaboratively to REACH our full potential.

Autumn 1

In our Mathematics sessions this term, we will be tackling ‘Place Value within 1,000,000’, ‘Addition & Subtraction’, and ‘Multiplication & Division’. Following this, we will be recognising and finding multiples and factors, identifying prime numbers, calculating square and cube numbers and multiplying / diving by 10, 100 and 1,000.

In English, we will be using the books ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg, ‘The Amazing Tale of Ali Pasha’ by Michael Foreman and ‘The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas’  by David Almond. All of these books will be used to stimulate our writing and enable us to compose a series of diaries about significant events in the life of Annie Edson Taylor’s life.

For guided reading sessions, our focus is a book called ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’ by Elena Favilli & Francesca Cavallo‘.

Curriculum: Our R.E. topic this term is ‘How & Why do Christians read the Bible?’ We will be investigating the different books of the Bible, as well as looking at how Christian belief affects everyday life.

Our Science learning, will be within the area of ‘Materials – Mixtures and Separation.’ Geography takes us to the oceans of the world and in Design Technology you’ll be taking a look at bridge building.

Art is Mrs. Singer’s speciality and you’ll be looking at how to draw, showing movement. Music is also very exciting this term, as you’ll be learning how to play the clarinet. (Mrs. Singer is great at doing that too!)

Expectations

Reading: This year we aim to read every day at home, as part of our homework. We are recording all our reading in our reading journals and these will be kept in school.

Times Tables:  To help with learning times -tables, ‘TTRockstar’ games should be played at least three times a week.

Spellings: Each week, children should practise spelling 5 words from the year 5/6 common word list.

Homework: Homework will be set each Friday and should be handed in the following Thursday.

P.E. – P.E. lessons will be every Monday and Thursday this term.

Personal Belongings

• Reading books should be brought into school every day.
• P.E. kits should be in school all week and should consist of a plain white t-shirt, black coloured shorts, or jogging bottoms and black pumps. Trainers can be worn for outdoor activities.
• Bags should be as small as possible, in order to fit easily in the coat-peg spaces provided.
