Hello, and welcome to Osprey class! My name is Mr Donnachie and I am the class teacher for Year 3. I am really looking forward to working with your child this year.  I aim to provide a fun and stimulating environment where all children feel confident enough to express their ideas, helping them increase their confidence to shine.

Autumn 1

We are delighted to welcome our new Osprey Class into Key Stage 2. It promises to be an exciting and active year, filled with engaging learning experiences and a range of academic, creative and sporting opportunities.

What We Are Learning
Mathematics
This half term, we will begin by developing our understanding of place value. The children will learn how three-digit numbers are composed of hundreds, tens and ones, as well as how to partition, compare and order them.

We will then move on to addition and subtraction, using a range of practical resources, mental strategies and written methods to calculate with numbers up to 1,000.

English
In English, we will be exploring the beautiful picture book Seal Surfer by Michael Foreman.

The story follows a boy and his grandfather as they watch a baby seal being born on the rocks near their home. A special friendship develops between the boy and the seal, and they share many memorable moments as the boy grows up. When the boy gets into trouble while surfing in rough seas, the young seal comes to his rescue.

Through this story, the children will develop their writing skills by learning how to:

Group related ideas into paragraphs.
Build a varied and rich vocabulary.
Use prepositions to express time, place and cause.
Organise events clearly and logically.
Write with an awareness of purpose and audience.
At the end of the unit, the children will write a letter from the boy to his grandfather, explaining the important events he has missed.

Science
Our Science topic is Movement and Nutrition. The children will learn about the human skeleton, joints and muscles and explore how they work together to support and move the body.

We will also investigate the importance of nutrition and discover how eating a healthy, balanced diet helps our bodies to grow, move and remain healthy.

Music
In Music, we will be learning about ballads and exploring how stories can be communicated through song. The children will listen to and perform different ballads before using their creativity to develop their own musical storytelling.

Physical Education
In PE, we will be focusing on cricket and athletics. The children will develop a range of skills, including agility, coordination, strength and teamwork.

Expectations

• PE this half term is on a Wednesday and Thursday. Please remember to wear full kits (white T-shirt and black shorts). Due to safety, it would be preferable to take out earrings for PE, however, if this is not possible, please tape over them. Children can come to school in their PE kits.
• Fruit is available for snack, or if they wish, the children may bring in their own healthy snack to eat at morning break (only one snack please). Please do not send any food which contains nuts. Toast can also be purchased from the school kitchen.
• Please ensure your child brings in a water bottle each day so that they can stay hydrated.
• Reading is a hugely important part of learning, and we encourage you to ‘Strive for five’ times a week. You can access the accelerated reader quizzes via the link on the right-hand side of this page.
• Homework: please practice reading, spelling and Times Tables Rock Stars each week!
