Summer 1 – Toys Through Time

Summer 1 – Toys Through Time

This half term, Year 1 will be exploring the exciting question: How have toys changed?Through our history learning, children will compare toys from the past and present, discovering how materials, technology and play have changed over time.

In English, our learning will be based around the story ‘Toys in Space’, where we will follow the adventures of a group of lost toys who travel through space and meet a mysterious alien. The story will inspire our writing, role play and creative learning throughout the half term.

In Maths, we will be building our understanding of numbers to 100, using practical resources and reasoning activities to develop confidence with place value and number patterns.

Our Science lessons will focus on the five senses, where children will investigate how we use sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch to explore the world around us.

In Art, we will be developing our painting skills through our ‘Colour Splash’ unit, learning about primary and secondary colours and experimenting with colour mixing techniques.

In Music, we will be exploring pitch through singing and listening activities, while in PE we will be developing our coordination and teamwork through Ninja Skills and Rackets, Bats and Balls.

We are looking forward to another exciting half term filled with creativity, exploration and hands-on learning!

We utilise every minute of the day to immerse our children into their learning. Mrs Thomas will assist with daily additional phonics learning in the afternoons, and Mrs Dutta will teach Year 1 on Mondays.

With the Phonics Screening Check fast approaching (WB 8th June), we now have phonics cards available for additional practise at home. Please make sure your child brings them back into school every week to ensure they are swapped for an alternative pack.

Expectations

Expectations

Reading is at the heart of our school here at Little Sutton. Children in Red Kite Class will have the opportunity to enjoy a story being read aloud to them every day, and they are often provided time to delve into a book of their choosing in our cosy reading corner. We also expect all children to read at home to an adult every night – strive for five!

PE will be taught on a Wednesday (afternoon) and Thursday (afternoon). Children should arrive to school in their PE kits on both of these days. We also encourage pupils to bring a bottle of water into school every day as well as one healthy snack to enjoy at break time.
