Year 2 – Merlin Class

Welcome To Merlin Class

Summer 2

I hope you all had a lovely half term break in the glorious weather! This half term, our overarching topic is ‘Castles’ In History, we will learn all about The British Monarchy where we will travel back to 1066 and the Battle of Hastings! We will look to create a castle picture in art, using a range of textures before making a collage for our castles. In D.T, we will be creating a Castle structure! As scientists, we will be exploring plants and what they need to grow, conducting a fair investigation. We are excited to share a lovely narrative ‘Grandad’s secret giant’ which is all about friendship. This will be our focus text in English, where we will look to create our own stories by the end of the year, using many features we have learnt. In Maths, we will continue wit our learning about fractions before moving on to time, position and statistics. In Geography, we look forward to consolidating our knowledge from the previous half term and using fieldwork skills when we go to the beach later on in the term. We may even collect some shells in our pouches that we have sewn! A very exciting and busy last half term of the year ahead!

Expectations

• P.E will be on Tuesday afternoons and Thursdays. On both days children are to come in wearing their school uniform. They should bring with them a plain white t-shirt and back shorts/joggers/leggings and trainers are appropriate. Please no football kits, branded clothing and hair should be tied up.
• There is no need to bring in a snack for your child in the morning as school can provide some fruit. However, if you choose to do so, we encourage a healthy snack such as a piece of fruit or veg. Toast can also be bought.
• Can you please bring a water bottle in for your child, with their name on so they can stay hydrated throughout the day.  We do encourage water only.
• It is also very helpful if all your child’s clothes can be labelled with their name- especially jumpers!

How you can help at home:

• Read, read and read some more! This will really help your child’s development across all areas of the curriculum. Please ‘strive for 5’ times a week. Please sign their reading diaries accordingly and have your child bring them in every day.
• Please complete the spelling frame task set each week online.
• Counting- there are so many opportunities at home to count. e.g.- counting objects, playing games, timing an activity
• Telling the time- in Y2, children are expected to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Any consolidation of o clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past would be beneficial.
• Encourage your child to undress and dress themselves including buttons/ shoe laces/ zips
