Autumn 1

Autumn 1

Welcome to Year 4 – Autumn 1 🍂❄️
We are very excited to begin our new school year together! This half term, our topic is ‘Frozen Adventures’, where we will be exploring the Arctic through a range of exciting and engaging learning experiences.

Meet the Year 4 Team
Mrs Georgeson will be teaching Year 4 on Mondays, Thursdays and Friday mornings.
Mrs Singer will be teaching on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Mrs Dutta will be teaching on Friday afternoons.

See below of some of the learning we will be doing this half term!

English – Race to the Frozen North
Our English learning will be based around Race to the Frozen North, which tells the story of explorer Matthew Henson and his journey towards the North Pole.

During our English lessons, we will develop our writing skills by learning about:

Expand noun phrases by the addition of modifying adjectives, nouns and prepositional phrases
Choose nouns or pronouns  appropriately for clarity and cohesion and to avoid repetition
Use fronted adverbials
Organise paragraphs around a theme (to organise and sequence more extended narrative structures)
Use commas after fronted adverbials

Geography – Exploring the Arctic
In Geography, we will continue our Arctic adventure by learning about Matthew Henson and his journey to the North Pole. We will use maps of the world to explore climate zones and biomes, before investigating the physical and human features of the Arctic.

Science – States of Matter
In Science, we will investigate the three states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. We will explore their different properties and investigate how materials can change from one state to another through processes such as melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation.

Design and Technology – Survival Torches
In DT, we will be thinking like Arctic explorers and considering what equipment might be useful for survival. We will design and make our own torches, developing our practical skills and thinking carefully about the purpose and design of our products.

RE – How Muslims Worship
In RE, we will be learning about Islam and exploring how Muslims worship. We will learn about some of the important practices, places and objects associated with Muslim worship and develop our understanding of how faith influences people's lives.

We are looking forward to a fantastic half term of exploration, discovery and learning as we embark on our Frozen Adventures! ❄️🧭
